I've Been Diced! episode 76: Series games

There are a lot of series games in the hobby, both in the market and in our personal collections. This episode, our panel talks about series wargames and other boardgames. What are the advantages and disadvantages, for both the game consumer and publisher? Plus, a game off the beaten track that has special resonance for Yours Truly. (c) 2017 Tom Grant

  1. As an aside, the OSR movement isn't about resurrecting D20 (as in Dungeons & Dragons v3.0/v3.5/Pathfinder RPG), but it refers to the movement of using some of the oldest sets of rules for roleplaying across various genres. D&D gets the most attention obviously, but other OSR (Old School Rules) for Marvel Super Heroes, Chill, etc. also fall under this umbrella.

The entire movement is actually a bit of a reaction against d20/D&D 4E, going to a simplified set of rules, usually with a couple of modern design tweaks to make them flow better.

All that being said, the OSR arena, especially for fantasy games, is getting crowded and over-populated. There are a couple dozen different core rulesets that purport to emulate everything from the first scribbled notes of D&D to D&D 2nd edition.

Just thought I would clarify what the OSR game movement is about.
